About Music Notation

Modern musical notation evolved over centuries, with the five-line staff system becoming standardized in the 16th century. This system allows musicians to read and perform music composed by others, across different time periods and cultures.

The treble clef (also called G clef) is used for higher-pitched instruments and the right hand of piano. The bass clef (F clef) is used for lower-pitched instruments and the left hand of piano.

Being able to quickly recognize notes on the staff is essential for sight-reading and learning new pieces efficiently.

  • 3Start with beginner difficulty and work your way up
  • 4Say the note name out loud as you identify it
  • 5Listen to the note to connect visual and audio recognition
  • 6Once comfortable, practice with actual sheet music
