Understanding BPM

What is Tempo?

Tempo, measured in Beats Per Minute (BPM), is the speed of music. It tells musicians how fast or slow to play a piece and helps establish the feel and energy of a song.

Different genres have characteristic tempos: Ballads are slow (60-80 BPM), Pop songs are moderate (100-130 BPM), and Dance music is fast (120-160 BPM).

Knowing the BPM of a song helps you set your metronome correctly, create DJ mixes, or learn songs at the right speed.

Tips for Accurate Tapping

1

Tap to the Beat

Focus on the kick drum or main pulse of the song.

2

Be Consistent

Try to tap at exactly the same point in each beat.

3

More Taps = Better

The more taps, the more accurate the average BPM.

4

Ignore Fills

Keep tapping steadily even during drum fills or breaks.

5

Use Half Time

For very fast songs, tap every other beat and double the result.

6

Check Multiple Sections

Some songs have tempo changes—check different parts.
