Music Theory

Understanding Scales

Scales are the foundation of melody and harmony. They define which notes "belong" in a piece of music and create the emotional character of songs.

The major scale, with its pattern of whole and half steps (W-W-H-W-W-W-H), has been central to Western music for centuries. From this "parent" scale, we derive all the modes.

Pentatonic scales, with just 5 notes, are found in virtually every musical culture around the world, from Chinese folk music to American blues.
