About the Piano

The piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in Italy around 1700. Unlike its predecessor the harpsichord, the piano could play notes softly or loudly depending on how hard the keys were pressed - hence its original name "pianoforte" (soft-loud in Italian).

Today, the piano remains one of the most popular instruments in the world. Its 88 keys span over 7 octaves, making it one of the most versatile instruments for learning music theory, composing, and performing.

This virtual piano uses Web Audio API to generate sounds in real-time, providing an accessible way to practice and play anywhere.

Tips for Playing

  • 1Use headphones for the best sound experience
  • 2Practice with proper finger positioning - curved fingers, relaxed wrists
  • 3Start with simple melodies before attempting chords
  • 4Use the sustain pedal (spacebar) to connect notes smoothly
  • 5Try different sound types to find what suits your style
  • 6Practice scales to build muscle memory and finger strength
